Tax is worked out on $89,000, after the $1,000 standard deduction for work-related expenses that applies from 2026–27. If your actual work expenses are higher, you can claim them instead and your tax would be lower.

How the numbers are worked out

Your pay is turned into a yearly figure first. Hourly pay uses the hours you enter over 52 weeks, and if the amount includes super, the super is taken out to find the salary. Salary sacrifice comes off before tax. From 2026–27 the $1,000 standard deduction for work-related expenses comes off too, and the rest is your taxable income.

Weekly, fortnightly and monthly figures divide the year by 52, 26 and 12. The calculator uses the same tax rules as the MyFinancialFuture planner.

What it leaves out

It works out the tax you owe for the year, which can differ a little from what is withheld from each pay. The standard deduction isn't allowed for in withholding, so it comes back as part of your refund at tax time. Deductions other than the standard deduction, other offsets, family and spouse rules, the tax-free threshold claimed with a second employer, non-resident and working holiday rates, and the cap on super for very high salaries are not included. Your tax return or the ATO's own calculators give the official figure.

How a pay rise is taxed is covered in a pay rise and a higher tax bracket, and the surcharge in the Medicare levy surcharge in 2026–27. To see what your pay builds into over the years, open the planner. It is free and needs no sign-up.
